Where Nothing Happens, Everything Matters.

For this conceptual title design, I imagined a Netflix adaptation of I Who Have Never Known Men, crafting a streaming interface, title page, and animated sequence that reflect the novel’s haunting tones. Drawing from the book’s psychological tension and stark setting, I used restrained typography, cold textures, and ambient motion to echo themes of isolation, memory, and control. The project explores how paratext—the visuals that surround a story—can prime a viewer’s emotional experience before the first scene unfolds.

Rooted in the novel’s exploration of isolation, memory, and the fragile boundaries of human connection, the title sequence draws heavily on the visual language of desaturated, archival photography. By pairing these aged, timeworn images with soft yet deliberate washes of muted color, the design creates a tension between the familiar warmth of nostalgia and the quiet disquiet of the unknown. Faces are intentionally obscured through graphic interventions, a visual metaphor for erasure and the stripping away of identity that pervades the story. These interruptions disrupt the viewer’s ability to connect fully with the figures, reinforcing the narrative’s themes of alienation.
